I'm a twenty-nine year old Army wife currently living near a large Army post. I have an unhealthy obsession with Dr. Pepper, the Internet, cloth diapers, and ridiculous TV shows. I'm a stay at home mom to two beautiful daughters, AJ and Amelia. We also have a 6 year old beagle named Abby who is as dumb as a box of rocks.

I Just Might Be the Lunatic You're Looking For

In fact, I know I am!

I'm planning to drive at least 14 hours in the car alone with a 15 month old.

My days of seeing this in the backseat are over for now. :(

At least I get to stop halfway and spend some time with the family in Ohio.

But have I mentioned that I'm planning to drive TWO seven hour days with a 15 month old?

I'm a little nervous.

She's at the stage where if she doesn't get exactly what she wants, when she wants it, she throws a fit. Oh wait, you call that the terrible two's? I'm so glad that my baby is an overachiever and started that phase the second she catapulted into her second year of life.

This is pretty much standard these days.

Anyway, back to my fears.

I considered flying. I really did. With gas prices the way they are, it would probably make fiscal sense to fly instead of drive, but I really could not justify the pain and agony AJ would cause me and everyone within a 600 mile radius fellow passengers if she had to be strapped-into a car seat on a plane for a few hours. Add to that the fact that trying to fly alone while transporting a carseat, stroller, luggage, diapers, snacks, toys, AND a 15 month old? No thanks.

I'd rather drive.

At least then I'm the only one who wants to crawl into a hole and die bring D's Ear Protection in the car with me. Plus we can take our time. We can stop whenever, and we have an excuse to visit family in Ohio.

Plus I have no problem turning the radio up to drown out the screeching from the backseat. We also have a DVD player for the car, so I'm planning to get a few kiddie DVD's to attempt to entertain her.

I'm not a stranger to long drives with baby, but AJ's at the age where if she's awake, she wants to be active, and I'm doing this trip alone, so I just want to be prepared.

Other than that, if any of you have any advice for me, it will be greatly appreciated!

  1. You are one brave lady!! i'll be praying that it goes well for you. :) And....while I'm at it though this is off the topic of driving with a baby - what kind of ab workout do you do every day?? I'm looking to start one. Gotta get good habbits started for the wedding.

  2. I've flown with all four of my kids. Alone. :) Over Christmas when my husband was deployed we flew to Georgia to my Mom's and then drove 8 hours to Universal Studios. You can do it!! :)

Also, the DVD player will be a life saver! Bring a few things she loves to watch (her fav cartoon) and a few things she has never seen to keep her interested!

  3. I don't think your a lunatic at all! I would make 6 hour drives from AR to TN with my two toddlers all the time. The DVD players are god, and when they fail, the windows and the radio volume are magic. :) Save travels!

  4. It'll likely go better then you think. Bring some easy, soft snacks. Bring juice. Movies are good. Bring some books for her to look through. Soft toys; in case she throws them at you. ;) When I travel with mine we stop every 3-4 hours to stretch. Occasionally I've stopped somewhere with plenty of grass and given them 15 minutes to run.
